Key gifting occasions to remember

With so many “occasions” falling into a single year how is it best to keep on top of all the gifts needed, and do we really need to buy something for every event? We look into the traditional occasions throughout the year where gifts are often expected and ask, which ones really matter?

14th February – Valentine’s Day is traditionally known as “The most romantic day of the year” so why do we feel like we have to show this romance in a material gift? One of the reasons people indicate that they ‘hate’ Valentine’s Day is because it’s too commercial. Common gifts are flowers or jewellery, but we love a good old-fashioned card. It means your other half has gone to enough trouble to go out and buy it, written something nice and not maxed out the overdraft this month. Keep it simple on the 14ththis year and gift a nice gesture rather than breaking the bank.

11th March – Mother’s Day is a tricky one, if you ask any Mum what they would like, the reply would probably be to spend more time with her children. Sadly, we don’t know anyone selling time, but we do know of a little retailer called NOTONTHEHIGHSTREET.COM who offer some amazing experiences you can take part in with your Mum. Choose from tea tasting, chocolate making or even courses in bee keeping, there’s something for everyone and it gives you a good excuse to treat Mum whilst treating yourself.

17th June – Father’s Day. Every Father is impossible to buy for, short of buying another pair of socks, he’ll claim he doesn’t need anything. That’s where we come in. Aside from Christmas, Father’s Day is our busiest time of year because have you ever met a man who didn’t love an old map? From hip flasks to trays, journals to keyrings, all printed with a map of their special place, we’ve got something to suit any Dad this June.

Atlas & I have partnered with the wonderful Riverford Organic who create plentiful vegetable boxes using seasonal produce farmed by dedicated, organic farmers. Riverford delivers fresh, seasonal, organic vegetables once a week from your local veg team, each week offers a varying box of seasonal vegetables. We have chosen to partner with Riverford because we strongly believe in championing organic farmers, removing GM crops and harvesting quality products over high quantity vegetables which aren’t organic.

Engagements are (hopefully) followed by a wedding where giving a gift is a must, so Engagement presents are a grey area. Sending a card is normally the done thing but the choice of good engagement cards out there is limited. We’ve found a company that makes wonderful cards called PAPIER who will also send the card straight to the happy couple.

Weddings are a celebration of two people coming together and starting a new life. Traditionally the couple will have a wedding list of items needed to help them set up their new home, however some people may want to give the couple a more meaningful gift. Why not feature the location where the couple got married, the honeymoon destination or their new home on one of our vintage maps?

Anniversary gifts are a time to celebrate the time you have spent together, the places you’ve visited and the memories you have made. Traditional anniversary etiquette suggests paper, leather and wood for the early years of marriage and we have just the gifts to tick these off your list.

Birthdays. What do you get the man who has everything? Men are notoriously impossible to buy birthday presents for, but you know all the places that mean something special to him, so why not materialise them on one of our unique products. Browse our personalised vintage map products or sign up to our reminder service and we will email you 6 weeks before his Birthday with some gift ideas.

25th December - Christmas creeps up on us every year and before we know it, it’s two weeks before Christmas and we haven’t got halfway through our list! Luckily, we take orders right up until the 18th December so even if you leave it a bit later, you can still win the Best Present award this year. If you get super organised this year, watch out for our early bird Christmas offers in October and get your order in early.
