Before You Start

Step 1 - Check the Wall

The wall should be:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Flat and sound
  • Free from dust, grease, loose paint, or wallpaper

Avoid fitting onto:

  • Damp walls
  • Flaking paint
  • Uneven surfaces without correction

A glass splashback should not be forced onto a badly uneven wall.

Step 2 - Check the Splashback

Before applying sealant:

  1. Carefully position the splashback against the wall to confirm fit.
  2. Check alignment and positioning.
  3. Ensure socket cut-outs and edges line up correctly.

Step 3 - Prepare the Surface

Clean wall surface

Allow to dry fully.

Do not touch the cleaned bonding areas afterwards.

Important

Do NOT remove the backing from the splashback. If your splashback has a protective backing or safety film applied to the rear, this must remain in place, the backing forms part of the product and helps protect the finish.

Step 4 - Apply the Low Modulus Silicone

Apply the silicone directly to the back of the glass splashback.

Using a sealant gun, apply the silicone in an even circular blob pattern across the rear of the glass.

Application Guidelines

  • Space silicone blobs approximately 100mm (10cm) apart
  • Keep the pattern evenly distributed across the panel
  • Leave a 30–50mm clear gap around all edges of the glass
  • This edge clearance helps prevent silicone from squeezing out when the splashback is pressed into position

Apply enough silicone to create a secure bond while still maintaining a cushioning layer behind the glass.

Do not spread the silicone continuously across the whole surface.

Step 5 - Fit the Splashback

With assistance if needed:

  1. Lift the splashback carefully into position.
  2. Place the lower edge onto packers if used.
  3. Gently press the glass against the wall using even pressure.

Use a spirit level to confirm alignment.

Avoid pressing too firmly, as excessive pressure may force silicone out and reduce the cushioning effect behind the glass.

Step 6 - Allow the Silicone to Cure

Once positioned:

  • Secure temporarily with masking tape if required
  • Avoid moving or disturbing the splashback

Typical curing times are:

  • Initial hold: several hours
  • Full cure: 24–48 hours

Always follow the sealant manufacturer's curing guidance before using or cleaning the splashback.

Important Safety Advice

Where fitting around electrical sockets:

  • Switch off power at the consumer unit first
  • Remove faceplates before fitting
  • Refit carefully once the splashback is secured
  • Do not overtighten screws against the glass

Following these steps will help achieve a secure, neat installation while protecting the splashback finish and preventing excess sealant from appearing around the edges.
